Magic

I've had a new idea for a play, which I hope I can write in time for the Vertiy Bargate prize, but I probably won't get it done in time. It's a fairy tale about a girl called Lara who lives inside her imagination and who doesn't cope with the real world very well. It sees Lara falling in love, but she is unable to deal with the relationship and ultimately she has to decide whether to stay in her fantasy world or enter reality. I am putting this play on the backburner though, as I've got to finish my Hoodies play first, which, I think will officially be called "Hoodies" from now on, unless I have a sudden flash of inspiration before I post it off.

The picture is by Zindy S. D. Nielsen

I think the new play sounds really interesting. :-)

No, really - I think it sounds incredibly theatrical, and it will give the people putting it on so much freedom to go nuts with it. And speaking as some one who directs (*cough pick me cough*) that's a good thing!

Sounds dead good. All the goblin creatures could get all jealous that soemeone is trying to steal her away and try to sabotage the relationshiop.
I assume there are goblins in it...there are goblins...right?

oooh cool idea, you can join the ranks of my scifi/fantasy theatre movment then.... and if you can rent it, watch 'the science of sleep' by same director/writer as 'eternal sunshine of the spotless mind' "The film tells the story of Stéphane (Gael García Bernal), a young man whose vivid dreams and imagination often interfere with his ability to interact with reality." for filmic inspiration...

I'm aiming for 'magic realism' -I'm inspired by Angela Carter, Salman Rushdie and Jeanette Winterson (plus the musical 'Wicked'!).

Woah Nellie! I had the EXACT same idea for a play and the "real" world and the "fantasy" world start to disintergrate into each other! The person who is into non-reality has a habit of sleeping and uses sleep as a way of escape with devistating valium enduced consequesnces! You can have that one for free as I'm possibly not going to write it as it'd too difficult for me!

My person doesn't dream the fantasy world, the fantasy world exists, but she's the only one to have access to it (or that's what she thinks anyway). And when she's on stage it's all bright and weird and when she's off stage it's mundane and ordinary (as you see it from the other characters p.o.v). Have written one and a bit scenes so far.
